Bauhaus - pushing the boundaries of creative thinking

Why I love the Bauhaus design movement, and why it's the perfect inspiration for my art classes and journaling.

Doodling is so much a part of my art creation world, prized for its 
✍🏼 low-pressure,
✍🏼 spontaneous,
✍🏼 and meditative nature.

And I see Collage ✂️ as a form of "doodling" with paper, for the very same reasons.

Similar to how doodling allows for mindless, creative mark-making through repetition, collage allows for the repetitive arrangement of cut-up materials and the exploration of ideas without needing a final, "perfected" result in mind.

And with both, you HAVE to have a willingness to play.

And play we did - with the Bauhaus Collage Cat! (One of the creations I did recently with my art students, both online and in-person on the Gold Coast, Australia.)

Why Bauhaus? I hear you ask.

Well, Bauhaus (one of my favourite design movements originating in Germany over 100 years ago),

Is known for its SIMPLICITY.

Bauhaus is known for heavy CONTRASTS between light and dark shades of colour. There can be seen great contrasts in textures too, ranging from smooth and delicate to rough.

Bauhaus is known for ASSYMETRY. Things never quite line up as you’d expect in Bauhaus art, leading to interesting compositions.

Bauhaus has pushed the boundaries of creative innovation and thinking, over the last century, and has become a symbol of democracy, freedom and artistic expression. It's no wonder since it was born between 2 World Wars (and Nazi Germany tried to silence it)!

And it's no wonder it holds a special place in my heart, having grown up in Apartheid South Africa.
