Do you need to be artistic to doodle?

How to get out of your own head, and allow doodling to work it's magic like it's supposed to.

I've got you doodling, HOORAY!

BUTโ€ฆ

You look down at your creation, and you're thinking things like:
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ This isn't pretty?
๐Ÿ˜ฃ This doesn't look like art?
๐Ÿ˜ซ I am a useless doodler?

And I have one word for you:

S T O P!

WHO says you have to be an artist to doodle?

No-one.

I'm pretty sure it's just YOU who's putting the pressure on!

And how can I guess this?

I've been there too.

In fact I ALWAYS have this nagging thought in the back of my mind.
'Will my audience be inspired to create something like this, if it doesn't look pretty??

I know I need to take my own advice ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

But, we're all human, right!

Living in a society that favours beautiful things.

Instead what we need to remember is:

Doodling is NOT about drawing well, it's about thinking.

It's simply something to keep your hands busy while your brain works.

To encourage it to come up with fresh ideas.

Everyone CAN learn to doodle.

And believe it or not, just like you have a style to writing that comes naturally to you,
so you have your own personal style to doodling.

Even if you've never doodled before.

What kind of doodler are you then?

  1. Word doodler: you like to write a random word and then re-trace it many times? Perhaps you even adorn your word with decorations?
  2. Abstract doodler: you like to make square or circular patterns that result in a unrecognizable objects ?
  3. Nature doodler: you like to draw flowers, trees, mountains, suns, stars, moons?
  4. Picture doodler: you like to draw images such as pencils/ tables/ bicycles or cars?
  5. People and face doodler: you love the human form, and so your doodles are more cartoonish images of real or imaginary people?

If you're a beginner doodler, or prone to being critical of what you sketch, then start with what feels most comfortable and natural to you.

However, I do suggest styles 1-4, and steer clear of the more realistic doodles.

Personally I am a mix and love nature and abstract doodling. And if you're keen to have a helping hand, follow my lead as I create the more abstract of doodle in this quick & easy YouTube activity HERE.

Here's the take-away:

Try and stop the over-thinking and the self-judgement.

It takes no skill to doodle, just a desire to play.

Be creatively courageous, and your mind will thank you for it.
